This Privacy Policy explains what personal information we collect when you use Lithos or visit our website, why we collect it, and what rights you have. We’ve written it in plain language because we think you deserve to understand it.
The short version: 1°North is committed to minimal data collection. Lithos runs entirely on your device — we don’t have servers that store your geological observations, maps, or project files. Our data footprint is minimal by design.
1. What data we collect — and what we don’t
Data you give us directly:
When you contact us: your name, email address, and the content of your message.
When you subscribe: your App Store subscription is processed entirely by Apple. We receive only a confirmation that a subscription is active — we never see your payment details, card number, or billing address.
Data collected automatically:
Crash reports and diagnostics — If you’ve opted into sharing app analytics with developers in your iOS settings (Settings → Privacy & Security → Analytics & Improvements), Apple may share anonymised crash data with us. You can turn this off at any time. We use it only to fix bugs and improve the app.
Mapbox maps — Lithos uses Mapbox to display maps. When you view a map, your device makes requests to Mapbox’s servers to fetch map tiles. These requests may include your IP address and general location. Mapbox processes this under their own privacy policy: mapbox.com/legal/privacy
What we don’t collect:
Your field data, geological observations, or project files
Your precise GPS location
Usage analytics or behavioural tracking
Advertising identifiers
2. iCloud / CloudKit sync
Lithos offers optional iCloud sync, powered by Apple’s CloudKit. If you enable it, your data is stored in your own iCloud account and governed by Apple’s iCloud Terms of Service and Privacy Policy — not ours. We cannot access your iCloud data.
3. How we use your data
We use the limited data we collect to:
Respond to your support requests and questions
Fix bugs and improve the app (via crash reports)
Confirm active subscriptions
Comply with our legal obligations
We don’t use your data for advertising, and we don’t sell or rent it to any third parties.
4. Third-party services
Lithos relies on a small number of trusted third-party services:
Apple App Store — Handles subscription billing. Privacy policy: apple.com/legal/privacy
Apple CloudKit — Powers optional iCloud sync. Privacy policy: apple.com/legal/privacy
Mapbox — Provides map display. Privacy policy: mapbox.com/legal/privacy
We have chosen these providers for their strong privacy standards and use them only where necessary for the app to function.
5. Legal bases for processing
If you are located in the EU or EEA, we process your data under the following GDPR legal bases:
Legitimate interests — crash reports, to fix bugs and improve the app
Contract performance — subscription management
Consent — when you contact us
Legal obligation — where required by applicable law
6. International data transfers
We are registered in Singapore. If you are in the EU/EEA, personal data you share with us (such as support correspondence) may be transferred to Singapore. We ensure any such transfer complies with applicable law, including through appropriate safeguards.
Mapbox is a US-based company; their cross-border data transfers are governed by their own privacy policy.
7. Data retention
When we need to keep hold of your data we apply these retention periods:
Support correspondence — kept for up to 3 years after your last contact, or as needed to resolve any dispute.
Crash reports — anonymised; retained for up to 12 months.
Subscription records — retained for 6 years for tax and accounting purposes.
8. Your rights
Depending on where you are located, you may have the right to access, correct, delete, restrict, or receive a copy of the personal data we hold about you, and to withdraw consent at any time. To exercise any of these rights, email privacy@1-north.com. We will respond within 30 days.
EU / EEA users: All rights above apply, plus the right to data portability and to object to processing. You may also lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.
Australian users: The Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) oversees the Privacy Act 1988 and can be contacted if you have unresolved concerns.Singapore users: The Personal Data Protection Commission (PDPC) oversees the PDPA and can be contacted if you have unresolved concerns.
9. Children
Lithos is a professional tool designed for geoscientists of all experience levels. It does not contain objectionable content. While users of any age may use Lithos, it is a professional application and is not designed or marketed towards children.
If you suspect a child has provided us with personal data without consent from a parent or guardian, contact privacy@1-north.com and we’ll delete it promptly.
10. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy when our practices change. The effective date at the top of this page always reflects the latest version. We’ll notify you of significant changes via the app or our website.
